Definition
Eduroam is an initiative launched by TERENA that facilitates the mobility of European researchers and students by offering them connectivity when they travel. Users of the institutions that are Eduroam members thus have access to the Internet via the networks of the other participating institutions, which are mainly wireless.
The users' connection to the network of the institution they are visiting is similar to the connection they would have at their own institution: the user name and the password needed to log on are the same as those they use at the home institution, the only possible difference being the way the network is accessed.
Access methods
From their personal laptop computers or PDAs, visitors to ICFO are able to access various electronic services and resources, which include a connection to the Internet.
In our Institute this connection is established through a wireless network using 802.1x access, but in general, it can also be established through the wired network:
The wireless network is accessible from anywhere within the ICFO building.
In order to log on, enter your details, i.e. your user name (including your domain, u1122@icfo.es, for example) and the password you normally use at your home institution.
You will have access to the following services:
- Web access: HTTP, HTTPS
- VPN: IPsec, PPTP
- E-mail: IMAP, IMAPS, POP3, POP3S, SMTPS
802.1x access
The SSID associated to 802.1x protocol is eduroam. TTLS with PAP is used.
This type of access requires an specific client software in order to establish the connections, which can be included in the operating system or not.
For the iPhone, you can use this profile to automatically configure your iPhone to connect to the wireless network. After installation you'll be asked for your username (including domain) and password as explained above.
You may follow the tutorial to set the configuration. Click here to download the ICFO package necessary to connect using 802.1x.
Coverage
The Eduroam network can be accessed from anywhere in the ICFO building. Meeting rooms and offices are covered.
