Optical tweezers
Dmitri Petrov, Professor (ICREA)
Raman spectroscopy monitors the changes in the oxygenation state of a single human red blood cell while it is placed under mechanical stress using optical tweezers.
Credits: ICFO
Activities:
Biological systems function by traversing various mechanochemical pathways, thus correlating force measurements sensitive to detect forces down to 50 fN with the monitoring of chemical processes is an ideal method. Using optically trappable SERS probes brings Raman process efficiency to the same level as fluorescence. We study also a colloidal particle in a space- and time modulated potential energy landscape created by optical traps as a model of the noise –assisted phenomena in biophysics. We use Photonic Force Microscope as a spectrometer studying emission and nonlinear processes by measuring the momentum transfer of emitted photons to the probe.
