ICFOnian Receives Göran Gustafsson Prize

Giovanni Volpe, currently Professor at University of Gothenburg, receives one of Sweden’s most prestigious prizes for physics

March 25, 2024

Professor Giovanni Volpe, a 2008 ICFO PhD graduate supervised by ICREA professor at ICFO Dmitri Petrov, ICFO honorary Alumni representative from 2019-2023  and full Professor at the Physics Department of the University of Gothenburg, leading the Soft Matter Lab since 2016, was recently awarded one of Sweden's most prestigious prizes for physics, the Göran Gustafsson Prize.

This prize, given by the Göran Gustafsson Foundation with the help of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, is awarded in five categories, spanning natural science and medicine, and given to researchers no older than 45 years of age who are active in Sweden.  Giovanni received the physics prize "for boundary breaking research focusing on microscopic particles with active functions".

When asked in an interview by the University of Gothenburg how he would celebrate, Giovanni responded, “I’m more motivated than ever to work.  I think the best celebration is to actually put this motivation to good use and finish a few of the large projects, several years in the making, my group is working on, including the upcoming book Deep Learning Crash Course and the second version of our software for brain connectivity, BRAPH 2.0."

ICFOnians join Giovanni and the members of his University and research group in celebrating this important achievement.
