New ICFOnians

Nine new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of May. Welcome aboard!

June 09, 2017
Three visiting scientists, Pietro Massignan, Ariel Bendersky and Fernando Sols, three postdocs, Gabriel Senno, Wei Yang and Zakaria Mohammed Abd El-Fattah, one research engineer, Federica Maruccia, one PhD student, Pablo Marin, and one visiting student, Anamika Karunakaran, have joined ICFO in the month of May.

Pietro Massignan, who holds a PhD degree in Theoretical Quantum Physics, Niels Bohr Institute (Copenhagen, DK), has joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist. His research topics are disordered ultra-cold atomic gases, quantum gauge theories and ultracold atoms, spin-tomics and stochastic models for transport and self-organization in biological systems.

Ariel Bendersky, researcher from the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a visiting scientist. During his stay at ICFO, he will be collaborating with several projects in the research group.

Fernando Sols, who is a researcher from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist. At ICFO, he will be working on various problems of condensed matter and atomic physics.

Gabriel Senno, who obtained his PhD degree in Computer Science at Universidad de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina), is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be studying quantum laws and correlations from a computer science perspective.

Wei Yang obtained his PhD in condensed matter physics in 2014 from the Institute of Physics CAS (Beijing, China), and now he is joining the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by prof. Adrian Bachtold as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on nanotube resonators for helium experiments.

Zakaria Mohammed Abd El-Fattah, who holds a 2012 PhD degree from the University of Basque Country, Spain, has joined the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be studying atomically thin noble metals for nano photonics.

Federica Maruccia, who graduated with a 2013 Master’s Degree in “Rehabilitation Science” from the University of Pisa, Italy, is now joining the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a research engineer. At ICFO, she will be working with the research group as a clinical consultor and in-house medical doctor.

Pablo Marin, who holds a Europhotonics Master in Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics at Aix Marseille University, France and at KIT, Germany, is joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student. During his thesis, he will be conducting research on frequency combs.

Anamika Karunakaran, who is pursuing an MSc degree in Photonics from the International School of Photonics, CUSAT (India), is joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting student. At ICFO, she will be doing research on universal quantum thermodynamics.
