The Secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society of the Government of Catalonia visits ICFO

As part of the initiative smartCAT, the visit aimed to show the current status of research in quantum technologies at ICFO.

Recently launched by the Government of Catalonia and fully aligned with the European Commission’s "Europe 2020" strategy, the initiative smartCAT aims to turn Catalonia into a smart international reference region that intends to benefit from the use of technology and digital information in order to innovate in public services, boost economic growth and promote a more intelligent, sustainable and inclusive society.

On June 20th and in the framework of smartCAT, members of the Secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society of the Government of Catalonia visited ICFO to learn about the institute’s research program regarding quantum technologies.

The agenda of the visit included a presentation from ICFO director Lluis Torner, who offered an overview of the institute’s main research thrusts and technological developments, focussing particularly on the current statues of quantum technologies at the center.

The visitors had the opportunity to visit the Corning Lab, led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri and also to learn more about the the evolution of the quantum random number generator his team has created. , They also visited the Quantum Memory Lab, led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten, and learned about the research being conducted on quantum information networks and quantum memories or repeaters aimed at improving future internet communications based on quantum communications.
