New ICFOnians

Ten new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of July. Welcome aboard!

August 17, 2017
Two visiting scientists, Giacomo Giacalone and Jalpaben Soni, one visiting PhD student, Cyrine Ernandes, two postdoctoral researchers, Tihomir Georgiev and Avijit Saha, one research engineer, Wadim Kapulkin, one PhD student Sukeert Sukeert, two visiting students, Ainoa Guinart and Javier López, and one summer research fellow, Sergi Masot, have joined ICFO during the month of July 2017.

Giacomo Giacalone is a neurologist and a PhD student in experimental neurology in the San Raffaele Hospital in Milano, Italy. He has now joined the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a visiting scientist, where he will work in collaboration with the Hospital de Sant Pau to study ischemic stroke and its risks.

Jalpaben Soni, who holds a PhD in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, India, and is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, is joining the SLN facility led by Pablo Loza as a visiting scientist. During her stay at ICFO, she will be working in light sheet microscopy with wavefront encoding.

Cyrine Ernandes, who holds a Master’s degree in Condensed matter physics and is now pursuing a PhD degree in the Pierre et Marie Curie University in France, is coming to ICFO to join the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maria García-Parajo as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, she will be working on the application of photonic antennas for magnetic dipole enhancement using the NSOM platform.

Tihomir Georgiev, who holds a PhD in Physics from the Heidelberg University, is joining the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO prof. Michael Krieg as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr Georgiev’s main tasks will be to establish an optogenetic neurotransmitter system. His expertise in optical microscopy and cell biophysics will be an asset for many projects in the lab. He will also work closely with Dr Kapulkin in some joint papers in Brownian motion.

Avijit Saha, who obtained his PhD degree at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), India, is coming to ICFO to join the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Gerasimos Konstantatos as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on the synthesis of chalcopyrite nanocrystal systems and doping and stoichiometry control.

Wadim Kapulkin obtained his PhD in 2000 and is now joining the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO prof. Michael Krieg as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will be working on building an injection set-up for C. elegans transgenesis, the establishment of cell-specific CRISPR methods with the main objective to construct an optogenetic neurotransmitter system in C. elegans and the optogenetic characterization of LITE-1 as an alternative for light-activated ion channels.

Sukeert Sukeert, who holds a 2016 Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Hyderabad, is joining the Optical Parametric Oscillators research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh as a PhD student. During his thesis, he will be conducting research on the design, development, characterization, and study of novel frequency conversion and OPO sources for spectroscopy, imaging, and frequency metrology.

Ainoa Guinart, who is pursuing a BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the UAB, is joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a visiting student.

Javier López, who is pursuing a BSc degree in Physics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, is joining the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Juan P. Torres as a visiting student. At ICFO, he will be doing research on the role of entangled states in new types of spectroscopy of molecules and atoms.

Sergi Masot, who is pursuing a BSc degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Barcelona, is joining the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a summer research fellow.
