New ICFOnians

Twenty-five new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the months of November and December. Welcome aboard!

One visiting scientist, six postdoctoral researchers, six PhD students, one research engineer, five students, three visiting PhD students and three members of administration have joined ICFO during the months of November and December.

 

Ravindra Chhajlany, who holds a 2008 Ph.D. from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, is coming to ICFO as a visiting scientist at the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. At ICFO he will be working on a paper on fluctuating bind superconductivity together with the group of Simon Wall.

Nikos Fayard, who obtained a 2017 PhD from Institut Langevin, ESPCI, Paris Sciences et Lettres, France, is coming to ICFO to join the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Darrick Chang as a postdoctoral researcher. His position will allow him to work on Quantum Optics in dense atomic gases. investigate the implementation of quantum protocols and the phenomenology of the light-matter interactions in dense atomic media.

Robert Bettles is joining the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Darrick Chang as a postdoctoral reseacher. His main tasks will involve broadly investigate collective light-matter interactions in atomic arrays.

Michael Tayler, who holds a 2012 PhD in Chemistry from the University of Southampton, UK, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral reseacher at the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell. At ICFO he will be working on zero and ultra-low field nuclear magnetic resonance with atomic sensors.

Luke Maidment, who obtained a 2017 Engineering Doctorate in Optics and Photonics Technologies from the Heriot-Watt University, UK, is coming to ICFO to join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. His position will allow him to work on Mid-IR nonlinear optics and strong field physics

Alvaro Cuevas holds a 2018 PhD in Physics from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, and is now joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral researcher. His main tasks will involve quantum imaging and random walks.

Nicolau Molina, who holds a 2015 PhD in Microelectronics from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher at the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo. At ICFO he will be working on surface-science for nanophotonics using molecular structures based on aromatic hydrocarbons.

Florian Haberstroh, who obtained a 2018 MSc from the Light Technology Institute (LTI), Germany, is coming to ICFO to join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student. His position will allow him to work on lightwave electronics and field resolved measurements.

Daniel Urrego holds a 2017 Master in Physics from Universidad De Los Andes, Colombia, and is now joining the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICFO prof. Juan P. Torres as a PhD student. His main tasks will involve quantum imaging methods for metrology with enhanced resolution.

Sven Bodenstedt, who holds a 2017 MSc in Physics from the University of Stuttgart and Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology, Germany, is coming to ICFO as a PhD student at the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell. At ICFO he will be working on atomic sensing for zero and ultralow field magnetic resonance.

Ion Hancu is coming to ICFO to join the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a PhD Student.

 

Krystian Nowakowski holds a 2018 MSc from the University of Twente, Netherlands, and is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a PhD student. His main tasks will involve working on nano and topological photonics with gapped Dirac materials

Maxime Durand-Gasselin, who holds a 2018 Master in applied Physics from the Université de Sherbrooke, Canada, is coming to ICFO as a PhD student at the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO prof. Adrian Bachtold. At ICFO he will be working on mechanical resonators based on twisted bilayer graphene.

Frederic Catala, who obtained a 2013 MSc in Photonics from the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya, is coming to ICFO to join the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO Prof. at Michael Krieg as a research engineer. His position will allow him to work on collaboration with Impetux, a photonic company based in Barcelona.

Guifre Sanchez is pursuing a Mathematics and Physics degree at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, and is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin as a Student.

Ivan Company, who is working towards a Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, is coming to ICFO as a student at the SLN Facility led by ICFO prof.  Stefan Wieser.

Marc Botifoll, who is pursuing a Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, is coming to ICFO to join the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a student.

Albert Albesa is pursuing a Phyiscs and Chemistry degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and is now joining the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten as a student. His main tasks will involve the simulation of optical quantum memories.

Adam Teixido, who is pursuing an Engineering Physics and Mathematics degrees at UPC, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin.

Anna Dawid, who obtained a 2017 MSc. in Chemistry in the University of Warsaw, Poland, and is now pursuing a PhD degree there, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting PhD student. Her main tasks will involve working on a joint project between physics of ultracold atoms and quantum chemistry.

Enok Skjolstrup holds a 2016 MSc in Physics and Mathematics from Aalborg University, Denmark, where he is now pursuing a PhD degree, and is now joining the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a visiting PhD student. His main tasks will involve working on 2D materials nano photonics.

Jacopo Surace, who holds a 2015 MSc in Theoretical Physics from the Universitá  degli studi di Trieste, Italy, and is now working towards a PhD degree at the University of Strathclyde, UK, is coming to ICFO as a visiting PhD student at the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin. At ICFO he will be working on tensor-network techniques for quantum information theory and the study of manybody systems.

Sandra Ortonobes, who obtained a Master in Scientific Communication from the UPF, is coming to ICFO to join the Corporate Communications unit to work with the Quantum Flagship.

Antonios Oikonomou holds a 2014 PhD in Nanotechnology from the University of Manchester, UK, and is now joining the KTT unit as a business developer. His main tasks will involve working with the Graphene Flagship and also the commercialization of ICFO’s graphene portfolio.

Sergi del Castillo is coming to ICFO as a procurement specialist at the Financial Coordination unit.
