New ICFOnians

Seventeen new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of March. Welcome aboard!

Guy Whitworth, who holds a 2016 PhD degree in Physics from the University of St Andrews, UK, is coming to ICFO as a Postdoc at the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Gerasimos Konstantatos. At ICFO he will be working on the development of colloidal quantum dot light emitters and lasers.

Tymoteusz Salamon, who obtained a 2018 MSc in Physics from Ulm university, Germany, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a PhD student. His position will allow him to research quantum batteries, quantum engines and quantum thermodynamics preparation.

Matteo Scandi holds a 2018 MSc in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics from the Ludwig Maximilians Universität, Germany, and is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student. His main tasks will involve working on quantum many-body systems and thermodynamics.

Varun Varma Pusapati, who holds a 2019 MSc in Optics and Photonics from the Karlsruhe institute of technolog, Germany, is coming to ICFO as a PhD student at the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. At ICFO he will be working on infrared plasmonics and photodetection with graphene.

Julien Schreier, who obtained a 2015 MSc in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Engineering from the Aachen University, Germany, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a research engineer. His position will allow him to work on electronics design for prototypes.

Iwona Majewska holds a 2016 MSc in Chemistry from the University of Warsaw and is now pursuing a PhD degree there. She is joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting PhD student. Her main tasks will involve studying atto-second physics with quantum chemistry.

Eva Maria Garcia, who holds a 2016 PhD, is coming to ICFO as a visiting scientist at the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maria Garcia-Parajo. At ICFO she will be working on single particle tracking experiments and data analysis of integral receptors.

Javier Rivera Dean, who is pursuing an MSC in Photonics from UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a student. His position will allow him to work on quantum aspects of high harmonic generation.

Joel Perez Diaz is studying an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, and is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a student. His main tasks will involve applying machine learnign to detection/recognition of quantum phases.

Laura Malo Roset, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from, UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. At ICFO she will be working on machine learning and its applications for quantum phase transitions.

Sandhya Ganesh, who is working towards an MSc in Electrophysics at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, is coming to ICFO to join the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell as a student. Her position will allow her to work on high-performance computing simulations of spinor Bose-Einstein condensate behaviour and experimental work toward non-destructive measurements of spinor BEC dynamics.

Paula Diaz Carreras is studying a BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the UAB, and is now joining the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a student. Her main tasks will involve studying optimized nanoantennas for molecular detection.

Miren Lamaison Vidarte, who is pursuing a BSc in Physics Engineering, UPC, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICFO prof. Juan P. Torres. At ICFO she will be working on the quantum limits of the resolution of imaging and Lidar systems.

Arnau Fabra Ruiz, who is working towards an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UB, UAB & ICFO, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a student. His position will allow him to work on machine learning and many body physics.

Daniel Goncalves Romeu is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from, UPC, UB, UAB & ICFO, and is now joining the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Darrick Chang as a student. His main tasks will involve investigating quantum atom-light interactions at the few-atom level.

Raul Izquierdo Lopez, who is studying an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UAB, UB & ICFO, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst. At ICFO he will be working on a bright and pure photon source and strong coupling of a single molecule to a plasmonic nano-antenna cavity.

Jordi Valls Conesa, who is working towards an MSc in Photonics from, UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is coming to ICFO to join the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics of Solids research group led by ICFO Prof. Simon Wall as a student.
