Twenty two new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of January. Welcome aboard!

Two visiting scientists, two postdoctoral researchers, ten PhD students, two visiting PhD student, two students, four administrative members have joined ICFO during the month of January.

Eleni Diamanti, who holds a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, arrives to ICFO as a visiting scientist in the research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri. Holding a permanent position at PCQC, CNRS, Sorbonne Université – Paris, she is visiting ICFO to jointly work with the different research groups in the fields of Quantum Key Distribution and Imaging.

José García Guirado, who holds a PhD degree from that Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, has been working in the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof at ICFO Romain Quidant for many years as a research engineer. He is now changing his position to visiting scientist.

Marc-Olivier Renou, who holds a PhD degree in Physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland joins the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a post-doctoral researcher. During his stay at ICFO, Marc will be conducting studies on numerical techniques for many-body systems and causal networks.

Mingyu Zhang, who holds a PhD degree in Material Sciences, is now coming to ICFO to join the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof. at ICFO Jordi Martorell as a post-doctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be coordinating and carrying out work on photocatalysis including solar cells in a tandem configuration.

Marina Cunquero, who obtained her Master degree in Clinical Analysis Laboratory from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona, joined ICFO in 2016 to work in the SLN Lab led by Dr. Pablo Loza. Now Marina has decided to pursue her doctoral studies, and thus she will be working in the same field and the same group.

Niccolò Baldelli, who obtained his Master’s degree in 2019 -MSc in Theoretical Physics from the Universita di Pisa, in Pisa (Italy), has now joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be doing research for the project NOQIA, funded by an Advanced ERC grant.

Giorgio di Battista, who holds a Master degree in Physics from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, is now joining the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by Prof. at ICFO Dmitri Efetov as a PhD student. At ICFO he will be conducting his doctoral research in topics related to the project 2D·SIPC of the Quantum Flagship.

Michael Enders, who has obtained a Master’s degree in Physics from the Friedrich-Alexander Universitat Erlangen- Nornberg and Max-Planck Institute for the Science of Light, is now joining the Attoscience And Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student. At ICFO, Michael will be conducting his doctoral work on mid-IR extreme nonlinear optics.

Matteo Ceccanti, who holds a Master degree in Physics of Matter from the University of Pisa, Italy, has arrived to ICFO to join the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be working on understanding the strong light-matter interactions with polaritons.

Jessica Angulo Capel, who obtained a Master’s degree in Biophysics from the Universitat Ulm, in Germany, will now be joining the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maria Garcia Parajo as a PhD student. At ICFO, Jessica will combine molecular biology technologies with simultaneous multicolor live fluorescence microscopy with single-molecule detection sensitivity to follow the dynamics of biological samples as cells and molecules.

Saurabh Borkar, who holds a Master’s of Science degree in Optics and Photonics from the Universie D´Aix-Marseille, is now joining the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by Niek van Hulst as a PhD student. At ICFO, Saurabh will be conducting doctoral studies within the ITN project MUSIQ in the field of coherent ultrafast electronic and vibrational molecular dynamics of single molecules at room temperature using fluorescence readouts.

Ankit Kumar, who holds a MSc degree in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research-Pune, now joins the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO Prof. Adrian Bachtold as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be conducting his studies on electromechanical devices based on van der Waals heterostructures.

Katerina Gratsea, who has obtained a Master’s degree in Atomic and Molecular Physics from the University of Crete in Greece, is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be conducting her studies in the field of theoretical quantum physics.

Antonia Weberling, who is pursuing her doctoral studies in developmental biology at University of Cambridge, is visiting the SLN facility group led by Dr. Pablo Loza as a visiting PhD student. During her stay, Antonia will be conducting studies to try and understand the dynamics of embryo development using light sheet microscopy.

Javier Rivera, who holds a Master degree in Photonics from the joint program of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona, Institut de Ciències Fotòniques, in Barcelona, is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be conducting his doctoral research in the field of theoretical quantum physics.

Hai Hu, who is pursuing his PhD studies in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), is visiting the Nanophotonics Theory led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a visting PhD student. During his stay, Hai Hu will be conducting discussions and calculations for the design of new experiments of low-energy electron interaction with plasmonic nanostructures.

Adria Grabulosa, who is currently pursuing the Master’s degree joint program in Photonics from ICFO, UPC, UB and UAB, is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a visiting master student. During his stay at ICFO, Adria will learn about nanophotonic detectors.

Estefania Guillena, who is currently pursuing a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a visiting master student. During his stay at ICFO, Adria will learn about nanophotonic detectors.

Alba Berenguer Barberà is joining the Human Resources unit at ICFO led by Laia Miralles, as support for Human Resources and Education tasks and procedures.

Mercè Latorre Montull is now joining the Corporate Communications unit led by Brook Hardwick as Events Coordinator.

Silvia Tognetti, who holds a PhD degree in Clinical Medicine, is now joining the Knowledge and Technology Transfer unit led by Dr. Silvia Carrasco as a KTT Junior Project Manager to work in outreach initiatives and projects.

Anna Cipres Parro, is joining the Human Resources unit at ICFO led by Laia Miralles, and will be working on administrative issues concerning fellowships.
