ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant gives the Inaugurational Conference for Catalonia’s Science Week In a ceremony celebrated on November 16th at the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) and presided over by the President of the Parliament of Catalonia, Mrs. Carme Forcadell, ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant, leader the Plasmon Nano-optics research group, was invited to open the 20th Science Week in Catalonia by giving the Inauguration conference on Nanophotonics and Health.

In his talk, Romain Quidant addressed the public to raise awareness about the ubiquity of photonics in our everyday lives. He then offered insights into some of the exciting research in the field of Nanoplasmonics, mainly centered on the field of Health and the early detection of cancer markers in humans., which is being carried out in his group.

Invited speakers of the ceremony included the President of the Catalan Parliament, Mrs. Carme Forcadell, the Secretary of Universities and Research, Mr. Lluís Jofre, the director of the Board of Trustees of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation, Mr. Enric Banda, and the President of the IEC, Mr. Joan Domènec Ros. All spoke about the importance of science in society, emphasizing that it is a key ingredient of economic growth.

The 20th Science Week in Catalonia (SC \'15) takes place from 13 to 22 November, offering a wide range of more than 300 outreach multidisciplinary scientific and technological activities for the general public. This edition is focused on central themes of light and soil, taking into account that 2015 has been declared the International Year of Light and Light based Technologies as well as the International Year of Soil.

The Science Week is organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) with the support from the Catalan Ministry of Economy and Knowledge (the Secretary of Universities and Research).
