AD Telecom, UPC and ICFO team up to develop last generation display technology AD Telecom S.L., UPC and ICFO join forces to develop advanced three-dimensional display technology.

ICFO has become part of the ambitious VISION Consortium Project. The Vision (Last Generation Video Communication Tools) Project is coordinated by Telefónica and aims at the design of the video conference system of the future. In this last generation video conference system, the phone terminal is substituted by a screen where the interlocutor can be seen in 3 Dimensions.

UPC, AD Telecom and now also ICFO will contribute to the consortium by developing the advanced 3D display.

AD TELECOM S.L. started its activities in 1992. The company, based in Barcelona, offers processing solutions, hardware and software design, manufacturing, integration and commercialization of equipment in: Digital Design FPGAs, RF and Microwave components, Space Communications systems, and Optical Communications equipment. “Now that flat screen and high definition TV technology have been developed, the next challenge for the audio-visual industry is the three-dimensional television. This technology is going to act as a driving force for other industries, since it will be necessary to develop hardware for graphics acceleration, end- user interface software with 3D representation and application software. There will be unlimited possibilities for the video games sector,” said Antonio Alcayde, AD Telecom CEO. The ICFO Optoelectronics research group led by Valerio Pruneri will contribute its expertise in the area of optical engineering, optical design of complex systems, liquid crystals and thin film technology. “It is a great opportunity for us to make use of our patented ultrathin film technology to develop such a challenging product,” said Valerio Pruneri. “I am very happy to see my Master’s thesis work going into an advanced display device,” added Luis Martinez, ICFO research engineer involved in the project.

The Vision Project is funded by a CENIT grant from the Spanish Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).
